Here are my big takes from my three-part series of cutting back on oil usage:
The USA produces lots of oil and is now a net-exporter, but there’s no such thing as American energy “independence” when it comes to gasoline. I strongly suggest listening to the “US Energy Independence is a Myth” podcast for details.
Gas costs - and especially the increase in costs - hurt your pocketbook much less than you think (which is why you don’t reprioritize your driving choices).
There are conventional hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and electric vehicle (EV) options available now, and many more PHEVs and EVs are coming online soon.
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is a great option for those that need the peace of mind that a gas tank provides.
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) are eligible for incentives that can bring their costs below their conventional-hybrid (HEV) and internal-combustion (ICE) alternatives
Even if your next car is a pure EV, there are likely plenty of charging options for you, both at home or on the road. Fret not.
Cars running on battery power are fun to drive.
If anyone argues with you about this topic, just use these talking points :)

American politicians can’t control oil prices, like it or not, as oil is a globally-traded commodity.

You don’t need to move to a farm and ride horses. Cutting back on oil usage is a great first step, and you can do this by changing some current habits now or getting a much more efficient car next time you need one.
